Research on the Banggai Cardinalfish - Indonesia
2008 - 2011
The Banggai cardinalfish, a small marine fish belonging to the Apogonidae family, is endemic species of the Banggai Islands. Its distribution is restricted to around thirty islands, covering only 30 000 km2. For its beauty and original mode of reproduction, the species is highly appreciated by tropical fish enthusiasts across the globe. Every year, over 900 000 of them are exported to Europe, Japan and the United States.
The goal is to help preserve the Banggai Cardinalfish in situ by supporting various efforts:
- the implementation of Marine Protected Areas (MPA)
- on-site research with the aim of gaining a better understanding of species’ dynamics and the impact of fishing and anthropic activities
- the implementation of cost-effective, sustainable farming methods compatible with the local economic context (extensive or intensive production)
